Independence, which sits on the western edge of the Twin Cities metropolitan area, was named for Lake Independence after a group of boaters celebrated the Fourth of July on the then-unnamed lake about one hundred and fifty years ago. Independence remains rural, its rolling hills dotted with farms, horse ranches and estates. Independence is home to the Zurrah Shrine Horse Patrol and the Lake Rebecca Park Preserve which offers both a refuge for wildlife, including the trumpeter swan, and many year ‘round outdoor recreational activities.
