The Bancroft neighborhood in south Minneapolis derives its name from its elementary school, which was named for famed American historian George Bancroft (1800-1891). He is sometimes referred to as "the father of American history" because he authored the massive ten-volume History of the United States, published between 1834 and 1873. The neighborhood is bordered on the west and east by Chicago Avenue and Cedar Avenue and north and south by 38th Street and 42nd Street and is largely residential with single-family homes built prior to 1940.
