Downtown West is the true downtown center of Minneapolis. Here you will find the city’s skyscrapers, beginning with the historic Foshay Tower, which opened in 1929, and the majority of the hotels, restaurants and shopping available in the downtown area, including the carless Nicollet Mall and bustling Hennepin Avenue. This is also the part of the city famous for its skyway system, an indoor bridge network that links business, commercial and retail centers together in order to easily traverse the downtown area in winter sans boots and down jackets—but it is just as convenient a route in the summer. Downtown West is home to the Minnesota Orchestra, founded in 1903, and the stunning new public library, which opened in 2006.
