The Harrison neighborhood is close to downtown on the west side of Minneapolis. Two of its borders are the green spaces of Bassett's Creek on the south and Theodore Wirth Park on the west. Bassett's Creek Park contains over 70 acres of green space, with tennis and volleyball courts, baseball and soccer fields, playground and trails. The creek runs from Medicine Lake in Plymouth to the Mississippi River in downtown Minneapolis. Theodore Wirth Park is the largest regional park in the Minneapolis park system, covering 759 acres, complete with lake, fishing pier, beach, playground, picnic facilities, trails, a clubhouse and golf course. The neighborhood's two other boundaries are Interstate 94 and Lyndale Avenue North on the east and Highway 55 on the north.
The Harrison neighborhood takes its name from its elementary school, which derived its name from the ninth President of the United States, William Henry Harrison (1773-1841). Harrison was the first President to die in office, succumbing to pneumonia only one month after his inauguration. The eastern part of the district contains industrial land and the west nearer the parks is primarily residential.
