The Hawthorne neighborhood in north Minneapolis derives its name from American author Nathaniel Hawthorne (1804-1864), perhaps most famous for his novel The Scarlet Letter, published in 1850. The area is bordered on the east by the Mississippi River, on the south by Broadway Avenue, on the west by Emerson Avenue and on the north by Lowry Avenue. Interstate 94 West runs north and south through this area. It is home to 21-acre Fairview Park, which is known for its hilltop view of the Minneapolis skyline and contains a recreation center, fields for baseball, softball and football, a wading pool and a gymnasium. The neighborhood is primarily residential.
