Hiawatha, another of Southeast Minneapolis Longfellow’s popular neighborhoods, is home to Minnehaha Falls and Park and shares its name with Hiawatha Elementary School. The school and neighborhood are named after 19th century American poet, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow’s, famous poem, The Song of Hiawatha, which he penned in 1855. On the neighborhood’s western border is Hiawatha Ave (Hwy 55) and the Twin Cities light-rail line, conveniently making this neighborhood just minutes away from downtown Minneapolis, MSP International Airport and the Mall of America. On the east is the Mississippi River. The neighborhood is bordered on the north by 40th Street and on the south by 54th Street East. Like other Longfellow neighborhoods, it's comprised mainly of single-family homes and interspersed with quaint corner stores. To the southeast, the majestic Veterans’ Home with its historic 19th century columned brick buildings is nestled high on a bluff overlooking the Mississippi River’s most southerly Number 1 Lock & Dam as well as the Minnehaha Creek. The adjacent Minnehaha Falls and its park offer picnic areas, sheltered pavilions, walking paths, a wading pond and unparalleled views of the Minnehaha Creek Gorge and its iconic falls. And, in the winter, don’t miss the Fall's transformation from its pounding waters to its silent and spectacular ice formations.
