The Marcy-Holmes neighborhood is located across the Mississippi River from downtown Minneapolis and northwest of the University of Minnesota. It derives its name from two prominent Americans: William L. Marcy (1786-1857), politician and statesman who served as U.S. Secretary of State from 1853-57, and Oliver Wendell Holmes (1809-1894), poet and essayist who famously wrote "Old Ironsides," a tribute to the 18th century frigate, the USS Constitution. Besides the Mississippi River and the University, the neighborhood is bordered on the west by Central Avenue Southeast.
The neighborhood is home to university housing and Dinkytown, a four-block area located on the north side of the U of M campus filled with shops, restaurants and businesses primarily serving the University community. But plenty of visitors make their way to these unique establishments, too - you shouldn't miss the opportunity to eat at the renowned Al's Breakfast. The origin of the name Dinkytown is in some dispute, but many believe it began with the trolleys and rail cars called "dinkys" that were common in the area years ago.
