The Powderhorn community in south Minneapolis consists of six neighborhoods: Bancroft, Bryant, Central, Corcoran, Powderhorn Park and Standish. It derives its name from its local lake, which in its original form resembled a powder horn, a container made from the hollow horn of a cow or buffalo used by soldiers for carrying gunpowder. The park is the center of community life and the site for many festive events, including the May Day Festival, the Fourth of July celebration complete with fireworks, and the very popular August Art Fair. The community is bordered on the north by Lake Street East, on the east by Hiawatha Avenue, on the south by 42nd Street East and on the west by Interstate 35W. The neighborhoods are largely residential and primarily made up of single-family homes.
