Southwest Minneapolis encompasses some of the most popular residential neighborhoods with the highest walking scores in the city. The boundaries, give or take some nooks and crannies, are France Avenue on the west, Highway 35W on the east, Highway 62 on the south and 36th Street on the north. The community takes great pride and pleasure in its parks and pathways, particularly those that circle Lake Harriet or run along the borders of Lake Calhoun and Minnehaha Creek. Architecture varies from a few remaining turn-of–the century farmhouses to state-of-the-art green construction, but each neighborhood tends to have a predominant era of its own such as the Arts&Crafts bungalows and four squares of Kingfield and Tangletown, the ramblers and story-and-a halfs of Windom, and the cottages of Linden Hills—and all of them have sidewalks! In addition to fine restaurants, pastry and coffee shops galore, outdoor concerts, a farmer’s market, its own newspaper, The Southwest Journal (which is widely read and circulated far beyond the boundaries of Southwest Minneapolis) the community is home to two High Schools, Southwest and Washburn. Both schools offer International Baccalaureate programs.
