The Standish neighborhood in south Minneapolis derives its name from its former elementary school, named after Miles Standish, an advisor to the English colonists. He was perhaps made famous by a poem written about him by American poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. Published in 1858, it was entitled "The Courtship of Miles Standish" and was a fictionalized account of the early days of Plymouth Colony. In the early 1900s the Swedish and Norwegian immigrants to Minnesota began building their homes in this area and today it is a largely residential neighborhood.
The neighborhood's borders are 36th Street on the north, Hiawatha Avenue on the east, 42nd and 43rd Streets on the south, and Cedar Avenue on the west. Conveniently located on the Hiawatha Avenue light-rail line, residents are easily connected to downtown Minneapolis, the Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport and the Mall of America.
