St. Paul, one half of the famous Twin Cities, is the capital of Minnesota, the second largest cit in the state and claims to be “the most livable city in America.” With its walkable neighborhoods, tree-lined streets, and a diminutive downtown loaded with arts venues, museums, shops, parks and restaurants, that claim just might be true. While its twin city, Minneapolis, grew and prospered and came to be recognized for its cutting-edge appeal, St. Paul preserved its history, ancient buildings and natural charm. St. Paul is home to many private colleges and universities including Macalester and Hamline, the historic Como Zoo, a WPA project, and many large corporations such as Ecolab and Lawson Software. St. Paul celebrates its diverse heritage with many annual fairs and festivals, but it is probably best known for the Winter Carnival, a celebration begun in 1886 to embrace our magical winters.
