The Payne-Phalen neighborhood, just north of downtown St. Paul, is a vibrant, ethnically diverse area with a rich immigrant history. In the late 1800s, Swedish, Italian, Irish and German immigrants settled here, and the housing styles range from the Queen Anne, Italianate and bungalows they built to the rambler and ranch-style homes built in the 1950s. Residents and visitors to the area enjoy a wide variety of ethnic restaurants, shops and businesses. Green spaces include beautiful Phalen Regional Park, purchased by the city in 1899 and named for early settler Edward Phalen. The park offers a golf course, amphitheater, picnic areas, recreation center, and sand volleyball. The park's crown jewel is sparkling Lake Phalen, St. Paul's second largest lake, with its sand beaches and three-mile walking and biking trail which surrounds the lake.
The neighborhood is bordered by Larpenteur Avenue on the north, Bruce Vento Regional Trail and McAfee Street on the east, Grove Street and Phalen Boulevard on the south and Interstate 35E on the west.
