The Summit-University neighborhood just west of downtown St. Paul is a vibrant, ethnically diverse area with well-preserved homes and buildings dating from the late 1800s, and includes the upscale Ramsey-Cathedral Hill area. A broad range of homes can be found here, from historic Victorians to bungalows, apartments and townhouses. The area is home to many cultural and historic landmarks, including the majestic Cathedral of St. Paul, which dominates the city's skyline from its perch atop the city's highest point. Construction on the Cathedral, designed in the Beaux Arts style by E.L. Masqueray, began in 1907. In 1974 it was placed on the National Registry of Historic Places. The neighborhood is also home to many retail shops and restaurants as well as the College of Visual Arts, William Mitchell College of Law and St. Paul Technical College.
The neighborhood is bordered on the north by University Avenue, on the east by Marion Street and Kellogg Boulevard, on the south by Summit and Irvine Avenues and on the west by Lexington Parkway.
