Wayzata, “The Gateway to Lake Minnetonka,” is a village of fewer than 4,000 people about 11 miles west of Minneapolis. The name, Wayzata, a combination of Sioux words means “north shore,” which is precisely where Wayzata is located. Its history is similar to other Minnesota lakeshore communities near the city: starting slowly with lumber and agriculture, surging at the turn of the century in the heyday of local resorts, and taking off with the growth of suburban life from the 1930s on. What makes Wayzata and Lake Minnetonka unique was the arrival of the railroad early on and its proximity to Minneapolis, so it attracted prominent Twin Citians such as the Pillsburys, Hills and Daytons who built summer homes and mansions on the lake. Because the community drew tourists from all walks of life, and still does, you will see a variety of architecture from cottage to luxury home. Wayzata also has a thriving downtown full of boutiques and restaurants with fine views of the lake. Lake activities run all year long form boating and swimming and water skiing in the summer to ice skating and ice fishing and even ice golfing. Yes, Wayzata is host to the “Chilly Open” held on the frozen waters of Wayzata Bay every February.
