City History

In 1851, soon after the Treaty of Traverse de Sioux, the land that would become present-day Bloomington was settled. Named after Bloomington, Illinois, where the original settlers had come from, the community mainly consisted of farmers, millers, and blacksmiths. Through the turn of the century and up until World War II the township grew steadily, consolidating rural schools and adding infrastructure like telephone lines.

After World War II, Bloomington boomed. The birth of the baby-boomer generation prompted the community to shift away from the small-town feel. Increases in residential housing, schools, and commercial districts along with city funded fire and police departments completed the transition into a bustling suburb – even playing host to all of Minnesota’s professional sports teams from 1961-1981. When the Minnesota Twins and Vikings left Bloomington for the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome in downtown Minneapolis, the old Metropolitan Stadium became the site for the Mall of America.
