The city of Brooklyn Park was born out of the former Brooklyn Township, which was named for Brooklyn, Michigan by the earliest settlers. In 1860 the township split, with the southeast portion incorporating into Brooklyn Center and Crystal. The township grew slowly, and was incorporated into a city in 1969. Since then Brooklyn Park has grown to be the third largest suburb of the Twin Cities with 3.6 million residents.
