Cannon Falls is governed locally by the seven-member City Council. The members of the council include the Mayor and six at-large councilmembers. This group is responsible for creating and administering all city policies and ordinances.
First settled in 1854, Cannon Falls began as a small community nestled along the banks of the Cannon River. With the addition of the Chicago Great Western Railroad in 1855, the settlement grew into a popular stop along the route. The community was incorporated into the Village of Cannon Falls in 1874, allowing for more organized government and better infrastructure. In 1905, Cannon Falls officially adopted its city charter, cementing its status. This charming river town has expanded and modernized over the years, while maintaining it’s small town, historic charm. Today, Cannon Falls is the thriving community of just over 4,000 residents.
