Champlin was first settled when Father Louis Hennepin, Michael Accult, and Peter Dualy were captured by by the Sioux tribe, that eventually led to an Indian trading post being established. The first permanent settlement was known as Marshall Township, and by 1859 it was split into two towns: Champlin and Dayton. In 1947 a part of the former Champlin Township was incorporated to form the village of Champlin, and by 1971 the city of Champlin was formed.
