Local Government

The city of Elko New Market operates under the Mayor-Council form of government. The council consists of the Mayor and four additional councilmembers. This governing body is responsible for all of the legislative and administrative duties of the city.

City History

Elko New Market is a city that was once two separate communities. The former city of New Market was incorporated in 1865. The small community included a post office, and several other small businesses. Elko, on the other hand, was not incorporated until 1949, but was better connected to greater Minnesota and other communities through the Chicago-St. Paul railroad. Talks about a possible merger began in 2005, but did not become office until January 1, 2007. Since then, the city of Elko New Market has grown into a community of over 4,000 residents.
