Named after Glen Coe, Scotland, Glencoe was first settled in 1855. The village boomed in 1872 with the advent of the Hastings and Dakota Railway, which was followed soon after by the Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul and Pacific Railroad. This opened the village up economically, creating a commercial center for trading and business. The city was incorporated in 1909, and has since grown into a community of approximately 6,000 residents.
