City History

After the first attempt at settlement in 1856 was thwarted by a combination of dissent from Anoka citizens and a prairie fire, Ham Lake found more stable roots in 1866. It began as a part of Grow Township, but in 1871 was separately organized as Ham Lake Township. The community relied on agriculture and dairying, and slowly over the next decades other businesses were built in the area. With the addition of State Highway 65 in 1940, the township boomed. Over the course of the next several decades, growth continued and the Township was incorporated into the City of Ham Lake. Today, this community is home to approximately 16,000 residents and offers a spectacular place to call home.
