Timber Trails Public Transit provides public transportation services to the residents of both Kanabec and Mille Lacs counties. This service is available to the general public for a fee, as well as to seniors and veterans for no cost.
The local governing body of Kanabec County consists of five commissioners hailing from the five districts of the county. This board is responsible for all administrative and legislative oversight of county operations and budgetary action.
Kanabec County was established in March of 1858. Brunswick was named the county seat, but 25 years later it was moved to Mora, where it exists today. Featuring a primarily agricultural economic landscape, Kanabec grew rather slowly, even with the addition of the railroad. Today, Kanabec County is home to just over 16,000 residents.
