Maple Plain is located within the boundaries of the Orono Public School District, #278. This district is known for being the home of one of the best high schools in the state. In 2014, Orono High School was one of only two high schools in Minnesota to received five national awards. The district has been awarded multiple times as both a State and National District of Character, providing students the most well rounded education that goes beyond academics.
West Hennepin Dial-A-Ride and Metro Transit provides public transportation services to the residents of Maple Plain. Metro Transitās Express Route 674 makes it easy for those living in the area to commute into the downtown districts of the Twin Cities.
The five-member Maple Plain City Council consists of the Mayor and four council members who are responsible for all matters of city policy, including appointing a City Manager to administer said policy.
Maple Plain was established, and has flourished, because of the dense, rich, black soil in the area. This created an agricultural boom after early settlement in 1854. With the addition of the railroad in 1868, the lumber industry boomed, as did the permanence of Maple Plain, though it was not incorporated until 1912. Today, Maple Plain is a thriving community with just under 2,000 residents.
