Meeker County, named for Judge B.B. Meeker, was established in February of 1856. The same year, a sawmill was erected, and within the next six years, flourmills were constructed in several communities within the county. After the Civil War, the population of Meeker County boomed, welcoming a wave of northern European immigrants. With the additional residents, schools were built and industries including dairy and livestock (hogs and cattle) thrived. Today, Meeker County is home to just fewer than 25,000 residents and continues to grow.
