City History

Mendota Heights is one of the oldest permanent settlements in the state of Minnesota, first settled around the time that Fort Snelling was founded. Being one of the oldest communities it houses some of the oldest historic structures in the state, including the oldest church ā€“ Saint Peterā€™s ā€“ and buildings associated with the American Fur Company dating back to the 1830s. From its inception through the 1940s the city was a truck and dairy farming community. After 1950, Mendota Heights transitioned seamlessly into a premier suburb of St. Paul, with golf courses, residential neighborhoods, and estates claiming the land.
