City History

Incorporated in 1891, New Brighton was born out of industry. The Minneapolis Stockyards and Packing Company took root in the area, and as it expanded prompted more businesses to locate nearby. Hide houses, rendering works, and slaughterhouses comprised many of these businesses, creating the “Butcher’s Spur,” an area which holds that name to this day.

As industry continued to boom, hotels and homes began emerging, creating a thriving town. Unfortunately, with a downturn in the economy and a few suspicious fires, the cattle industry ceased to exist in New Brighton, and was replaced primarily with agriculture. Today, New Brighton is a bustling Twin Cities suburb with over 20,000 residents.
