City History

Anton Philipp first settled New Prague in 1856, buying 160 acres in then Helena Township. Known as Praha from 1872 to 1879, the town was officially incorporated into the village Prague. With the addition of the railroad in 1877, the agricultural town expanded, sending commodities into greater Minnesota and gaining new businesses. With the expansion came a grain elevator and flourmill, which earned the village the nickname of the “Flour City.”

In 1885, “New” was added to the village name, as population growth continued. Through the rest of the 18- and 1900s, New Prague expanded, built and reinforced infrastructure, and continued to modernize. Now, the city is a proud community of over 7,500 residents.
