North Branch is a city with a history of ever changing boundaries. Originally incorporated into a village in 1881, the incorporation of the land included all of the territory that had been designated as Branch Township in 1861. In 1901, the area was reincorporated, designating the most densely populated 1 square mile to the Village of North Branch, leaving the rest of the land to Branch Township. In 1961 Branch Township was incorporated into a village, and so began talks of a merger. After a failed attempt in 1984, Branch and North Branch merged ten years later, into the city it is today.
