Oak Park Heights was first platted on May 27th, 1857 as Oak Park in what is now known as Bayport Township. Because of its location in relation to the river, Oak Park became an industrial center, with a sawmill and a barrel making company staking their claim in the following decades. The construction of Highway 36 in the 1930s brought with it an influx of tourists, and prompted the area to be re-platted. Oak Park Heights as we know it today was incorporated in 1959, and since then has grown into a thriving community of approximately 5,000 residents.
