The city of Orono is a statutory “Plan A” city. This means that it functions under a City Council that consists of the Mayor and four councilmembers all elected at large. The Mayor serves a two-year term while councilmembers serve four-year terms.
The area that would be present day Orono was first settled in 1858. The current location was split in two, with the southern region belonging to Excelsior Township and the northern belonging to the Medina Township. Because this made it difficult for those in the southern region to conduct business with the other parts of the Excelsior Township, due to Lake Minnetonka, the Townships were redrawn in 1868.
In 1889 the Township of Orono was created, though it encompassed a much larger area than the city does today. As time went on, pieces were annexed until Orono was incorporated into a Village in 1955. There have been several additional annexations, and detachments since then, the last occurring in 1994. Since then Orono has sustained its borders, and is currently a beautiful suburb with just over 7,000 residents calling the city home.
