As home to about 2,500 residents, the city of Osseo is located within just twenty minutes from Minneapolis. In Native American, Osseo’s name means “City of Light”.
Osseo is a beautiful city filled with parks and well maintained green spaces. The Department of Parks & Recreation not only maintains the parks and trails, but also provides countless recreational activities for residents of all ages. Osseo Area Schools provides educational and lifelong learning services to the residents of Osseo. Maple Grove Transit provides public transportation services to the city of Osseo and its residents. Not only are there regularly scheduled routes running within Maple Grove and Osseo, but there are also express routes into the Twin Cities for commuters to utilize as well.
Osseo is governed locally by the five member City Council consisting of the Mayor and four councilmembers, all elected at-large. This body is responsible for drawing up and implementing city budgets, policies, and ordinances.
Having first been a part of the townships of Brooklyn Park and Maple Grove, Osseo was first incorporated on it’s own in 1875. The area was primarily utilized for it’s wood, and grew out of the expanding lumber industry. The city grew rather slowly until the end of the Second World War. After that time, with improved highway systems and a growing number of families in the area, Osseo began to shape into the city is has become. Today, the city is home to just under 2,500 residents.
