City History

The first people in the Paynesville area were the Sioux and Ojibwa tribes. Later in its history, land spectators investigated the area, and decided it was the perfect place to build a town. Two railroad lines went right through Paynesville, and this attracted merchants from other parts of the country. Farmers from outside of town began to visit as businesses opened. Today, that same exciting commercial climate is alive and well. Farmers continue to visit, and residents continue to enjoy everything the town offers.
