Rochester began as a stagecoach stop between the Twin Cities and Dubuque, Iowa. With the expansion of the railroad, the city grew to a destination of its own. The area was hit by a massive tornado in 1883, which, after killing 37 and injuring 200, prompted the construction of a medical facility. Dr. William W. Mayo had cared for the injured after the catastrophic tornado, and was instrumental in the building of St. Mary’s Hospital. The practice grew and is now the world famous Mayo Clinic.
