Transportation

Rochesterā€™s public transportation system consists of bus routes serviced by First Transit. The city also boasts a system of skyways, and subterranean walkways that connect most of the buildings in downtown.

 

Local Government

The city is serviced by a Mayor and City Council system. The City Council consists of 7 members, which are all elected officials. Rochester is part of both Minnesota state legislative district 25 and 26.

 

City History

Rochester began as a stagecoach stop between the Twin Cities and Dubuque, Iowa. With the expansion of the railroad, the city grew to a destination of its own. The area was hit by a massive tornado in 1883, which, after killing 37 and injuring 200, prompted the construction of a medical facility. Dr. William W. Mayo had cared for the injured after the catastrophic tornado, and was instrumental in the building of St. Maryā€™s Hospital. The practice grew and is now the world famous Mayo Clinic.
