City History

Originally settled in 1853, Rosemount’s population was primarily Irish Catholic, which left an impression on the city that can be seen today. As more and more settlers came to the area, there came a need to organize the community. On May 11, 1858, the day Minnesota became a state, the settlers of Rosemount met for the first Township meeting. In the next ten years, the railroad expanded into Rosemount, and with it came the construction of a 40,000-bushel capacity grain elevator and a thriving business district. Though the grain elevator is still being used today, the primary industry has changed to oil production. The Pine Bend Refinery – the largest oil refinery in Minnesota – is located within Rosemount and provides 900 full-time and between 400 and 2,000 contract jobs.
