City History

Originally settled in 1853, Rosemountā€™s population was primarily Irish Catholic, which left an impression on the city that can be seen today. As more and more settlers came to the area, there came a need to organize the community. On May 11, 1858, the day Minnesota became a state, the settlers of Rosemount met for the first Township meeting. In the next ten years, the railroad expanded into Rosemount, and with it came the construction of a 40,000-bushel capacity grain elevator and a thriving business district. Though the grain elevator is still being used today, the primary industry has changed to oil production. The Pine Bend Refinery ā€“ the largest oil refinery in Minnesota ā€“ is located within Rosemount and provides 900 full-time and between 400 and 2,000 contract jobs.
