City History

Saint Anthony was first incorporated into a township in 1861, and encompassed much of surrounding Northeast Minneapolis. In 1887, Minneapolis annexed a majority of the township, leaving less than two square miles unincorporated. In 1945 that section of Hennepin County was incorporated into Saint Anthony Village, which is what many people still call it today. Though, in 1974 all Minnesota villages became cities, Saint Anthony continued to embody the small town village atmosphere, so the name stuck. Today, Saint Anthony Village is a vibrant Twin Citiesā€™ suburb and home to just under 9,000 residents.
