The St. Cloud Area School District (ISD 742) consists of 11 schools and serves St. Cloud and several surrounding towns. As the largest school district in central Minnesota, district 742 is known for its innovative teaching methods that incorporate old society values with new economic skills. St. Cloud also has a major private high school, Cathedral High School, as well as five other high schools that serve the area.

St. Cloud is home to several post-secondary educational institutions including St. Cloud State University, St. Cloud Technical and Community College, Rasmussen College, and Globe University/Minnesota School of Business.

 

Transportation

A regional transportation hub, the St. Cloud Metro Bus transit system provides service within the city as well as to neighboring Sartell, Sauk Rapids, and Waite Park.

 

Local Government

The city is served by a combination of the Mayor and the City Council. The council consists of seven members, four representing their respective wards, and three ā€œat-largeā€ members.

 

City History

Incorporated in 1856, St. Cloud began as a combination of three existing settlements ā€“ Upper Town, Middle Town, and Lower Town, which were distinct in the make-up of their populations. Over time, the city developed into a trade and processing destination for farmers in the surrounding area. The founding of the first granite quarry along with the expansion of the railroad into the city prompted the city to grow, laying the foundation for what is now one of the largest cities in Minnesota.
