Steele County, named for pioneer Franklin Steele, was founded on February 20th, 1855. Owatonna was established as the county seat, which it remains today. Situated on the Straight River, Owatonna grew more quickly than the rest of the county, with an economy bolstered by both agriculture and energy production. Today, Steele County is a thriving territory filled with promising employment opportunities and a population of just over 35,000 residents.
