City History

Organized on February 18th, 1870, Swift County was named after former Minnesota Governor Adoniram Swift. The county received a rail line to the county seat of Benson from the city of Willmar that same year, priming the area for growth.

With Benson and nearby Kerkhoven growing rather rapidly, both Appleton and Swift Falls were close at their heels. Mills and trading centers were established, though agriculture still reigned supreme as the industry of the county. This farming tradition still continues to this day, though now there are also agricultural equipment manufacturers and an ethanol plant that call the county home. With these new industries, the county now claims a total of just fewer than 10,000 residents.
