Local Government

The Waconia City Council is responsible for all city administrative and legislative matters. This council consists of the Mayor and four councilmembers, who meet regularly on the first and third Monday of each month.

City History

Waconia’s first settlers traveled north from New Orleans to inhabit the area, and were soon followed by German, Bohemian, Swedish, and Swiss immigrants. The first church, St. Joseph Roman Catholic Church, was organized in 1857, which met in settlers’ homes. The physical church building was constructed in 1858. Over the next few decades, Waconia saw the advent of the railroad and a boost in population as the community became a vacation destination. Today, Waconia is a thriving city of about 12,000, and is home to a strong economy, beautiful homes, and a spectacular school district.
