City History

Watertown was first settled at Rapid Waters in 1856. Two years later, the community was renamed due to a neighboring community within the county having a similar name. Within the next two decades, there were boom times, and difficult winters, but in 1877, the city was officially incorporated. Industries shifted from farming, to milling, to canning and food production as the 20th century progressed, and today the city continues to thrive. With a population of around 5,000, Watertown is a wonderful place to live, work, and play.
