County History

Winona County was established in 1854 in southeastern Minnesota. Located on the Minnesota/Wisconsin border along the shores of the Mississippi River, the territory was not only beautiful, but also fertile. Though much of the county began and continues to rely on agriculture as its main industry, the city of Winona is known for higher education and is currently the stained glass capital of the United States. Winona County is currently home to a buzzing economy and just over 50,000 residents.
