The city council is responsible for the legislative and administrative affairs within Winsted. This council consists of the Mayor and four council members, and meets publicly on the first and third Tuesday of each month.
Winsted was first settled in 1857, and incorporated thirty years later. After incorporation, schools, stores, churches, and mills were established and the village saw slow, but steady, growth. By the 1950’s the population rested at just fewer than 1,000 residents. But in the following decade, the addition of a hospital and the municipal airport brought more jobs, and growth to the area. Today, Winsted is home to approximately 2,500 residents.
