City History

The “Island City” was first settled in 1874, and grew rapidly over the first few years. By 1881, the entire city had been platted, a rail line ran to the settlement, and several shops and stores were open for business. The next decade brought hotels, additional businesses, and incorporation. In 1891 the City of Cumberland was official, and boasted the four wards of the city that exist today. Now, the city is home to over 2,000 residents, and claims ample employment opportunities and other amenities that make Cumberland a wonderful place to call home.
