City History

Anthony Judson Hayward, the city’s founder, discovered what we now know as Hayward in the 1870’s, and found a gold mine of opportunity. It was the perfect location for a lumber mill, wood pond, and railroad. While the town grew around the lumber mill and provided many jobs for loggers, other jobs were also created when Hayward became Sawyer County’s country seat.
