City History

Menomonie was first permanently settled in 1830 due to a surge in the lumber industry in the area. The Knapp, Stout & CO. lumber company, which was once the largest in the world, laid claim to the land and controlled the settlement in its entirety. This provided stability up until 1901 when the company closed. By this time, other businesses had moved into the area, including the establishment of a school. Today, that school is the University of Wisconsin-Stout, and Menomonie is a thriving regional center with approximately 16,000 residents.
