New Richmond was first founded in 1857. Named after the land surveyor who plotted the city, Richmond Day, the community had to affix āNewā to the name, as it was the second town in Wisconsin vying for it. The city grew at a steady pace until disaster struck in 1899. In June of that year, an F5 tornado ā the 9th deadliest tornado in United States history ā struck the town. This devastating twister killed 117 people, injuring an additional 125. The town sustained the most damage on Main Street, now Knowles Avenue, but it rebounded quickly and was rebuilt within five months. Though New Richmond began as a primarily agricultural community, the city is now home to a variety of industries and a thriving economy. Today, around 9,000 residents call New Richmond home.
