The sister cities of St. Croix Falls, WI and Taylors Falls, MN were first settled in the mid-1800s. Primarily a logging town, St. Croix Falls grew in population, gaining international attention in 1886 for a massive log jam. Because the area was the northern-most point accessible by steamboat, a variety of entrepreneurs came to the area to conduct business. The power of the river was harnessed when a hydroelectric dam was constructed in 1912. The dam provided power to the Twin Cities and cemented the utility of the area. Today St. Croix Falls is a beautiful small town with a population of just over 2,000.
