City History

Though first settled in 1853, 1856 saw the first government organization ā€“ that of Mower County ā€“ in the area that would become present-day Austin. As the community continued to grow, sawmills and gristmills were built, as well as schools, churches, stores, and hotels. In the late 1860s, the railroad reached Austin, prompting even more growth. As the town continued to boom, the need for additional government services was apparent, and in 1903, Austin became a Home Rule Charter City and offered Park and Recreation Services, Public Works, and more. Today, Austin is home to approximately 25,000 residents and is a spectacular place to work and play.
