Local Government

The City Council is the governing body of Brainerd. The council consists of 8 members including the mayor and 7 council membersā€”all elected at large. One member is elected from each ward and three at-large members. The City Council has the management and control of all the finances and property of the city and of all the departments.

 

City History

Northern PacificĀ railroad presidentĀ John Gregory Smith founded Brainerd and named it after his wife Anne Eliza Brainerd Smith and her father Lawrence Brainerd in 1870.Ā  the North Pacific Railroad built a bridge over the Mississippi River and used Brainerd station as a machine shop before Brainerd was officially named a city in 1873.
