City History

Chaska, first settled as Shaska, was originally platted in 1857. Because the area has abundant qualities of clay, brick making began as the communityā€™s main industry. By 1871 the town site was incorporated into a village, and continued to grow as brick manufacturing and distribution to the Twin Cities increased. In 1891, Chaska was incorporated as a city.

Moving into the 20th century, Chaskaā€™s industry expanded to include more agricultural products. Beet sugar processing, butter making, and flour making all provided jobs in the city, as well as canning the surrounding areas corn, tomatoes, and peas. Over the next century Chaska grew slowly, with a population spike following WWII. Today, the city is home to over 23,000 residents.
